This year has established the fact that our collective fascination with engagement rings—their cuts, their sizes, and their costs—is endless. While diamonds have always (and probably forever will be) a point of intrigue, 2025 alone has brought us Zendaya’s widely imitated 5.02-carat cushion-cut ring, disbelief over Georgina Rodríguez’s mammoth 35-carat rock, and some genuine moral panic over the .089-carat ring Belly Conklin received on The Summer I Turned Pretty. Then, of course, there was also the engagement heard around the world (hint: your English teacher and your gym teacher), which ushered in even more rock analyses about the big, brilliant-cut old-mine diamond ring that covers nearly half of Taylor Swift’s finger.

This massive engagement ring trend isn’t limited to celebrities. It seems like in today’s social media landscape, ring reveals are competing against each other and need to be impressive enough to stop your scrolling. So size matters, even despite the country’s major economic headwinds. Because while luxury spending at large is decreasing, affordable lab-grown options have made bigger rocks more financially accessible, while also warping our sense of what counts as “large.” “I would say 2 carats is the sweet spot,” says New York–based jewelry designer Bernard James, who also crafts custom rings with conflict-free natural diamonds. “People are skewing larger because they’re used to seeing bigger cuts. As lab-grown diamonds get more attention, people expect bigger—even if they go natural.”

While some shoppers might take the more savvy, budget-friendly route, others are willing to spend the equivalent of a college tuition, especially when it comes to an investment meant to last a lifetime. But if you want a statement-making ring, just know that it’s about more than carat size (despite all the chatter that spec inspires in pop culture). Rings don’t have to be large or cost a small fortune to look like they do. To really get the most visual impact per dollar, it’s about making smart cut choices, says Reema Chopra, founder of Khepri Jewels. “Pear and marquise cuts give you the best bang for your buck,” she notes. And an elongated silhouette? Optical illusion magic.

Chopra has also noticed a major push for rings that feel individual and personal, especially as lab-grown diamonds become more common. “People want to differentiate with color—like yellow or brown—or with cuts you can’t replicate,” she says.

So now, as engagement rings seem to be getting bigger and more unique, we asked 36 people to show us theirs—of all cuts and colors. We met some with lab-grown stunners and others with cherished family heirlooms and even one person who chose to pop the special question through this story (you can meet him below). What we found? While the social pressure for rocks to look larger is real, no matter the carat size, everyone just wants their rings to be an honest reflection of their style, their story, and, most importantly, their love

Diamond size: 10 carats

Ring specifications: Natural emerald-cut with tapered baguettes

The inspiration for my ring: My first engagement ring fell down the toilet on the airplane, a year after I got engaged. The airline staff tried to help, but it was gone. I spent time looking for a replacement and was originally set on another emerald cut, but I stumbled on this cushion cut and fell in love. That was nearly 28 years ago, and I got this second ring about seven years ago, just before our 30th anniversary.

Something I love about my significant other: I love that Seth makes me laugh, brightens my day, supports me, and always brings me coffee in bed in the morning 🩷

Were my nails done for the proposal? Yes—thank god for sisters. They made sure I had a fresh Russian manicure for the special day!

Something I love about my significant other: He is the most gentle, patient, and adoring man I’ve ever met in my life. He loves to see me shine and succeed and is always encouraging me to be great. He’s also fine as hell. That helps too.

My proposal story: While I was working at Man Repeller, Kiesh had my boss fake a Summer Friday [happy hour], so she could set up our house.
