- Jenny Han says she wanted to keep the audience guessing who Belly would end up with: Jeremiah or Conrad.
The Summer I Turned Pretty fans are nothing if not resourceful, and a little intense, so when a video of Gavin Casalegno and Lola Tung filming in Paris hit the internet last fall, it immediately went viral. Now that the series finale has aired, however, Gavin and author/showrunner/director/mad genius Jenny Han can confirm that those Summer I Turned Pretty scenes of Jeremiah in Paris were meant to trick fans.
“We did have Gavin come out so that we could have some stuff with him in Paris, just because I like to keep surprises for the audience,” Jenny told Entertainment Weekly. So, if you saw that viral video of Jeremiah embracing Belly in Paris, know that it wasn’t a deleted scene, but a complete fake-out.
According to EW, Gavin joined the cast in Paris last October, during which they filmed multiple fake Team Jellyfish scenes. “They were like, ‘Hey, we’re going to fly you out to Paris and you’re going to film some scenes,’” Gavin explained. “I was like, ‘I don’t know why, but sure. I’m down.’ I got to spend like a week or two out in Paris, which is not bad at all. I really enjoyed it.”
The Summer I Turned Pretty production worked the bonus scenes into the schedule by simply adding on to real scenes they were already filming. For example, in the one where Jeremiah goes to hug Belly by the Seine, it’s clear they were filming the sequence of Belly walking around Paris with her backpack and suitcase in episode 10—so not teasing a Team Jellyfish endgame.
“If you were really nitpicking the situation, you probably would’ve seen that it was for episode 10 and not [the finale], but it was fun to play,” Gavin said.
The fake scenes weren’t even written, as they were purely produced to keep the suspense alive, so the actors didn’t have any fake dialogue to learn or play. Secrecy was, obviously, key—but so was getting caught. “It was kind of fun to do that and see people leaning out of their balconies recording it,” Gavin added. “I felt like a CIA agent or something.”
The fact that these scenes were always meant to be fake might leave Team Jeremiah disappointed, but as a Team Conrad ride or die, I’ve never been more thankful to have been punk’d.
