It's been a whirlwind week for Stranger Things star David Harbour, thanks to the release of his ex-wife Lily Allen's tell-all album, West End Girl. For those unaware, Lily dropped her first record in seven years last weekend, which fans have alleged is a semi-autobiographical account of her relationship with David—and its subsequent breakdown.
Songs such as “Madeline” and “Tennis” document a potential open relationship agreement, while fans have also been speculating around the meaning of songs like '4Chan Stan' - so there's been a lot to unpack. Especially since costume designer Natalie Tippett claimed she had an affair with David after meeting him on the set of Netflix's We Have A Ghost.
Since dropping the 14-track album—which was written in 10 days last December—Lily, 40, has stressed that its contents are a “mixture of fact and fiction,” adding that fans shouldn't take the lyrics and their meaning as “gospel.”
Now, David appears to have broken his silence on the subject of their break up, reflecting on his “pain, slip-ups, and mistakes.” While speaking with Esquire Spain in an interview published yesterday, but notably conducted in September, before Lily's album release, David was asked if there was anything he would change about his life.
Zooming in on the “question of regret,” the 50-year-old admitted that he would change “either everything or nothing.”
He added: “You either accept your path completely and realize that even the pain and the slip-ups and the mistakes are all part of the journey, and that there's truth and growth, wisdom and deeper empathy and connection in all that.”
David then described his life as “like a house of cards.” He said that the “minute you try to change one thing, you kind of have to change it all.”
Speaking about his career as an actor, David said his purpose is to incorporate his life into “something that [he] can give to other people so that they can have a cathartic response to their lives.
“If you've never been through anything, what do you really have to offer?” he asked.
Finally, David revealed that the focus for his next 50 years of life is to create “more stories that are complex and rich and make you feel all the feelings and lift you up.
“Then of course there's personal stuff that I want to do, and people that I want to love, and be good to and nurture, things like that,” he concluded.
Lily and David first met in 2019 on the celebrity dating app Raya. In April 2020, the 'Smile' singer sparked engagement rumors when she was seen with a massive ring on her wedding finger. Fast forward to September 2020, the couple acquired a marriage license in Las Vegas, which gave them a year to get married.
The same month, the pair went to Las Vegas to tie the knot and were married at the Graceland Wedding Chapel in a small ceremony led by an Elvis impersonator. Following the wedding, they celebrated with In-N-Out burgers.
