It's official! Netflix has finally given us what we want and confirmed Bridgerton will indeed be returning for two more seasons after season four airs next year.
The much-needed exciting news was shared across social media yesterday evening (14 May) with the official Bridgerton account posting on Instagram posing a letter from Lady Whistledown to make the announcement.
In the letter covered in wisteria, Lady Whistledown writes: "Dearest Gentle Reader, rarely is this author granted the opportunity to share with you such information.
"It is with great please I can announce Bridgerton shall return for seasons 5 and 6. Do celebrate accordingly.
"And in the meantime, do prepare yourselves, for Bridgerton season 4 shall debut in 2026. It would seem this author is going to be quite busy. Yours Truly, Lady Whistledown."
We of course know the fourth season will cover the second eldest Bridgerton child's story, seeing Benedict fall in love with Sophie.
So what's in store for the plots of seasons five and six? Here's everything we know.
What will happen in Bridgerton season 5?
Netflix's Bridgerton is based on a series of eight books by Julia Quinn, which are published in order of the Bridgerton siblings ages, starting eldest to youngest, (apart from the first book which is Daphne's story).
If the Netflix series is to follow the same chronology, season five will follow Eloise's (Claudia Jessie) story as laid out in To Sir Phillip, With Love.
In the novel, Eloise starts corresponding with Sir Phillip Crane after the death of his wife Marina. We've actually already met Sir Phillip and Marina in the first season of the show. Sir Phillip is played by Chris Fulton and Marina by Ruby Barker.
Marina, who was initially in love with George Crane who died during the war, marries his brother Phillip. However, years later she is very unhappy and attempts suicide, and tries to drown herself in the lake.
Phillip managed to pull her out but three days later she dies from a fever. In his grief Phillip begins writing back to Eloise and they form a friendship despite never properly meeting.
After some time Phillip, who has been left alone to look after his children is desperately seeking a wife to help him run his household. Knowing Eloise is a spinster (at the ripe old age of 28 🙄), writes her a letter suggesting they get married. While Eloise initially refuses she can't help but be drawn in by him and finds herself travelling to his home. What will happen when she arrives?
What will happen in Bridgerton season 6?
Again if Bridgerton is to follow the same chronology as the book series, then it will follow Francesca's (Hannah Dodd) story, based on what happens in When He Was Wicked.
As we know already we've seen Francesca get married to John Stirling, the Earl of Kilmartin in season 3. At the end of the season John introduces Francesca to his cousin Michaela.
Michaela is based on the character of Michael from When He Was Wicked. In the book, sad spoiler alert, but John dies and Francesca is left a widower.
Michael is known as a notorious rake and has now become the Earl of Kilmartin following his beloved cousin's death. And he holds a secret, he's been in love with Francesca ever since meeting her before her wedding to his cousin.
Francesca is devastated by the death of her husband and spends many years grieving his death, and is initially resistant at the idea of falling in love again. However, soon the slow-burn romance and their feelings for each other catchup with them. But how do they navigate grief and guilt with their new found romance.
In the Netflix series there's also the added element that because Michaela has been gender flipped, Francesca and Michaela will have a queer romance, the first time Bridgerton has had this as the lead romance for the season.
It's going to be sad, devastating and also beautifully romantic, and we cannot wait to see it.
