Netflix
  • The Netflix series is about the family drama behind the scenes of a popular NYC bar and restaurant.
  • Jude Law and Jason Bateman play brothers Jake and Vince Friedken.
  • The supporting cast includes a Succession alum and a Gilded Age hottie.

Black Rabbit, a new series on Netflix that's like if the restaurant drama and family The Bear had HBO stakes, knows how to bring the drama. Could that be because its cast is made up of major award winners and theatre-trained actors with a capital ACT from across the globe? Here's everything you need to know about the cast of Black Rabbit.

The show was co-created by Zach Baylin, who wrote the screenplays for King Richard, Creed III, Bob Marley: One Love, and Gran Turismo among others. The second co-creator is Baylin's wife Kate Susman, who worked with him previously producing the 2024 film The Order starring Black Rabbit's own Jude Law. Justin Kurtzel, who directed The Order, directed the final two episodes of Black Rabbit. Jason Bateman, who also stars on the series, directed the first two episodes. The following two episodes were directed by Bateman's former TV wife from Ozark, Laura Linney. So it really is a family affair, both on screen and off.

Jude Law as Jake Friedken

Jake currently owns the successful New York bar/restaurant/hang Black Rabbit. He’s divorced, and hasn’t seen his brother in years, but otherwise thinks his life is good and that things are looking up.

Law is best known for films including The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Holiday, Closer, Captain Marvel, the Fantastic Beasts movies, and Sherlock Holmes. He was on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew earlier this year. He has been nominated for an Oscar twice, for Ripley and Cold Mountain. He was The Young Pope!

Jason Bateman as Vince Friedken

No longer affiliated with the business and estranged from both his brother and his grownup daughter, Vince is going through it. He’s an addict and stumbles back into the lives of the folks at the Black Rabbit as a last ditch effort to rid himself of debt and turn things back around.

Bateman was once a comedy guy, known for Arrested Development and movies like Horrible Bosses, Juno, Zootopia, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Dodgeball. But while he'll still do the occasional comedy–shout out to Game Night–he's pivoted pretty hard into drama lately with this series, Ozark, and The Carry On.

Troy Kotspur as Joe Mancuso

One of the many problems that Vince brings to Black Rabbit is the fact that he is in debt to Mancuso, a scary local kingpin. Therefore, Vince's brother and his successful business becomes Mancuso's business.

Kotspur won an Academy Award in 2021 for his supporting role in the film CODA. He's a prominent theatre actor who has worked with the National Theatre of the Deaf in Connecticut and Deaf West in California and actually came to Broadway in Deaf West's production of Big River in 2003. You might also know him from Foundation on Apple TV+.

Mel is one of the waitresses at Black Rabbit.

If you haven't seen Dickinson, the Apple TV+ series about Emily Dickinson starring Hailee Steinfeld, I'm not gonna tell you just to watch for Birney. But she is exceptionally funny in it. Her other credits include Shining Vale and The Mist. She also recently starred on Broadway in The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window alongside Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan!

Robin de Jesús as Tony

Tony is the chef at Black Rabbit.

Hopefully Black Rabbit continues or another Netflix show snatches him up, because Jesús is a little underused. He originated the role of Sonny in In The Heights on Broadway with/starring/composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and played Boq in Wicked as well. He was in The Boys in the Band on Broadway and in the film, and also reunited with Miranda (who was behind the scenes directing) in the film tick, tick... BOOM!

Babbit is one of Mancuso's henchman and poised to take over the criminal organization.

Hopefully you don't recognize Coy from The Walking Dead, because he played a cannibal in Season 5 and that was hella traumatizing. You might also know him from main roles in less terrifying shows like Treme and The Deuce. Next, you'll see him on the DC Studios show Lanterns.

Wes is a successful musician, investor in the restaurant, man-about-town, and Estelle's partner in love.

You know Dirisu from Mr. Malcolm's List, a historical drama/romance you almost definitely watched during a Bridgerton hiatus starring Freida Pinto, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ashley Park, Zawe Ashton, and Theo James. He played Mr. Malcolm himself! He also appeared on shows like Black Mirror, Slow Horses, and Gangs of London.
