It’s Emmys night once again, and all of your favorite TV stars are on their best style behavior for the night. Sort of. Like a lot of mainstream entertainment awards shows, the red carpet choices at the Emmys don’t veer into “dumpster fire” territory nearly as much as they used to. The majority of attendees fall under the style classification of “just fine.” But some of them always stand out, for good reasons and bad ones. Here are 19 of the ones we noticed the most this year.

Britt Lower in Calvin Klein

The Severance star and Lead Actress in a Drama Series winner turned our heads, but we have to admit that the look overall feels like it’s lacking something, although we can’t imagine it would be improved by piling diamonds on it. It is quietly elegant, plays to her strengths, and looks like nothing else there, which are all points in its favor.

Lisa in Lever Couture

Call it “Glinda Glam.” The Blackpink singer and star of The White Lotus evidently managed to snag this gorgeous, cotton-candy confection of a gown before Wicked: For Good star Ariana Grande could get her hands on it. It’s a dream of a dress: floaty, romantic, and sexy. She looks amazing in it.

The star of Wednesday ditched the goth-inspired styles that have defined her through two seasons of promo work (not to mention Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) and opted for absolute drop-dead sexy glam. Like a lot of her red carpet choices, there’s a certain tension in the design. How does she walk in it? How does she sit in it? Will there be a malfunction? This is red carpet work on a high wire without a net and she’s totally unmissable in it.

Charlotte Le Bon in Courréges

Oh, girl. You almost had us with this one. The star of The White Lotus certainly got our attention with this slinky, armored gown that stood out among all the more conventional fare. The fit and construction are impressive and it’s the kind of gown you notice from the other side of the room. We love the tight hair, which lends it a severity and modernity that it needs. But the length of it kind of bugs. It should be a little longer. Worst of all is the shoe choice.

The star of The White Lotus dressed to his strengths in this adorable, stylish take on formalwear. We love the colorful vest, but we can’t say that overly complicated pants situation was needed.

Tramell Tillman in Dolce & Gabbana

The star of Severance and Supporting Actor in a Drama Series winner couldn’t possibly look more impeccable in this stunning white D&G double-breasted suit. We might have liked a quarter-inch taken off the pants hem, but that’s the only flaw we can find. Love the brooch.

Natasha Rothwell in Ines Di Santo

The star of The White Lotus and Supporting Actress in a Drama nominee opted to get her grande dame on in this voluminous, old-school ballgown that positively drips with formality and prestige. It’s not the freshest style of the night, and we really don’t like the sleeve design, but it’s certainly an impressive and memorable look. She looks beautiful.

Hannah Einbinder in Louis Vuitton

We’ve always loved the quirky/modern style of the Hacks star and Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series winner, but we have to admit we found this choice a little underwhelming. For starters, that neckline is a bit odd for us, and we hate that single spaghetti strap. The pattern looks too busy to our eyes and the overall style feels too conventional for her.

Chloë Sevigny in Saint Laurent

We’ve always been huge fans not only of the star of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story (and Supporting Actress in an Anthology Series nominee) but also of her unpredictable style. We might have been a little disappointed that she showed up in a gown we thought was fairly conventional at first glance. But those silly sleeves, the Swiss Miss hair, and the slightly strange jewelry placement all combine to make this feel appropriately Sevigny-esque.

10

Pedro Pascal in Celine

When it comes to Pedro’s and Tramell Tillman’s dueling white suits, we won’t do a whole “Who Wore it Best?” thing (but you’re free to do so, of course), mainly because the vibes are a little different. Tillman’s had a flawlessness to it that he clearly prefers while Pascal’s has that sort of casual sexy vibe he’s so good at. Still, we hate the goofy cuffs and the shoes look too casual.

Michelle Williams in Chanel

We can never predict what the star of Dying For Sex and Lead Actress in a Limited Series nominee will pick for any of her appearances. Sometimes it’s twee, sometimes it’s classically elegant, and sometimes it’s slightly odd but weirdly well-suited to her, like this vintage Chanel, that looks ethereally unusual from one angle and like a craft project gone awry from another. The skirt is beautiful, but the bodice sits a little high on her and that thick strap is kind of awful.

12

Aimee Lou Wood in Alexander McQueen

It’s one of those dresses that looks like she got at a vintage shop—and we don’t exactly mean that in a good way. The star of The White Lotus and Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nominee always had a slightly off-the-beaten-path style, but this dress feels too conventional and almost old-fashioned for her.

Quinta Brunson in Louis Vuitton

We’re always impressed with how skillfully the star of Abbott Elementary and Lead Actress in a Comedy series nominee dresses her diminutive size in such a perfectly proportionate way. The fit is always perfect, and the style always flatters her terrifically. She’s really good at this, which is why we thought this one was just okay. Love the Josephine Baker hair and the sleek style, but we’re not crazy about those heavy stripes or the size of that keyhole.

14

Seth Rogen in Etro

We’ve always sung the style praises of the star of The Studio and Lead Actor in a Comedy Series winner. Lots of men put the effort in, but he made a point of completely stepping up his game about a decade back and loudly urging his male cohorts to do the same. He’s got a fantastic sense of color and what cuts work best for him and his grooming is always on point. We love this rust shade and he wears it a lot.

15

Carrie Coon in Chanel

We imagine it must be such a relief for Carrie Coon to get out of those corsets and bustles from The Gilded Age and into a simple, pretty dress. But we don’t think the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nominee (for The White Lotus) picked the best frock for herself. Love the blonde pixie cut, but it tends to make that pale blue wash her out and the bodice is almost tortured it’s so over-designed. Can’t say we’re loving the dyed-to-match sandals either.

16

Selena Gomez in Louis Vuitton

The star of Only Murders in the Building adopted a more old-school elegant, “prestige actress” sort of style in recent years, as one should when she finds herself on the kind of career high she’s been on (not to mention being in love and engaged). Everything about this screams success and confidence. She looks comfortable in these sophisticated styles now and they really suit her. That red looks amazing on her and we like that she kept the styling low key.

Parker Posey in Valentino

Look, we love this gal—always have, always will. We’re thrilled The White Lotus star received the nomination for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and we certainly never expected her to show up to the ceremony in something conventionally chic or elegant, given her red carpet history. But even we were taken aback when we saw this tiered lavender gown with a capelet. Parker, you’re too young to be the wacky granny!

18

Lainey Wilson in Zuhair Murad

Sometimes you just want to see a little countrified glam on something other than a country music awards red carpet. Unfortunately, this doesn’t quite fit the bill. There’s almost a good idea here, but gown/pants hybrids only work if the proportions are just right. We hate that the gown is essentially a crop top and we think those pants needed to be either a slimmer cut or flared. The straight legs look odd.

Skye P. Marshall in Tony Ward

On the one hand, it’s unforgettable, unique, and hard to miss. On the other hand…well, it’s not what we’d call aesthetic. The star of Matlock certainly looked gorgeous herself, and we can see how that heavily embellished jacket could work as the centerpiece of a killer glam look, but that skirt—and we use the term loosely—looks like something you use to package rare and expensive produce.
