Once upon a time, powdery perfumes were classified as fragrances that smelled like powder cosmetic compacts and generally were comprised of violet, orris, rose, and musk notes. They might be the types of scents that remind you of your grandmother's lipstick or her signature floral scent (no offense, Nana). The powder fragrance family is a classic, but they also now have a whole new vibe that are much more wearable and fit for any age.

Today's powdery perfumes are complex, thanks to the addition of notes like vanilla, amber, and sandalwood, says perfumer Bérénice Watteau. "Many powdery perfumes have a velvety and enveloping feel on the skin, making them a great fit for anybody who is looking for a warm, creamy fragrance,” Watteau explains. If this type of scent sounds appealing, then you're in the right place, because Cosmo rounded up the best powdery perfumes below. We've personally sniffed, spritzed, and worn each one, and can confidently say there's a powdery perfume on the list for every type of fragrance vibe.

One Cosmo editor says: "Most of the time people think of powdery perfumes, they're thinking of rose, iris, or violet. Muse, however, keeps that vintage quality but reimagined it with lavender, clary sage, ambrette, and incense. It's refined and chic, and there's an ink note that makes this smell totally unique and modern."—BETH GILLETTE, BEAUTY EDITOR

DedCool Xtra Milk Fragrance

Xtra Milk Fragrance

One Cosmo editor says: "Xtra Milk is the epitome of a clean and warm scent. I love wearing it on its own as a creamy fragrance, but it's also a star when it comes to layering. I typically pair it it with my favorite gourmand or floral fragrance for a unique signature scent that nails the "your skin but better vibe," apropos of the amber and musk."—JASMINE HYMAN, ASSISTANT BEAUTY EDITOR

One Cosmo editor says: "Cotton perfumes aren't my usual favorite; they often smell cheap to me. But White Tee is exactly how I want my clothes to smell right out of the wash, so it's the perfect body mist to spritz on after a shower. It's clean and soapy, making my skin (and whatever clothes I spray it on top of) smell crisp and brand new."—BG

Best Floral Powdery Perfume

Glossier You Fleur Eau de Parfum

You Fleur Eau de Parfum

One Cosmo editor says: "Glossier You Fleur is hands-down my fave fragrance from the brand—if Gen Z was a powder perfume, it would be this. Yes, it's floral, but not in a matronly rose way. It boasts the same scent composition as the OG Glossier You, but it also has ylang-ylang and osmanthus to sweeten it. Plus, notes of ambrox and cashmeren ground it with a warm and modern powdery vibe."—JH

One Cosmo editor says: "This scent from Maison Margiela perfectly captures that post-everything shower freshness. It smells like airy bubbles, clean linens, and has a hint of warmth from rose, musk, and coconut milk. It’s soft, cozy, and fresh, like wrapping yourself in a fluffy towel straight after a bath with all your favorite bodycare accoutrements."—JH

One Cosmo editor says: "This is the most powdery perfume I own, to the point that it honestly smells like baby powder, if there was such a thing as expensive baby powder for rich lil nepo babies. It's not your standard rose-y, mature powder perfume—instead, there's clove, plum, vanilla, and cashmere that take it to a more musky place."—BG

    Vyrao Ludatrix

    Ludatrix

One Cosmo editor says: "I'm really into the idea of pheromone perfumes. The concept of smelling like sex is so iconic to me (I'm the beauty editor at Cosmopolitan, after all). And Ludatrix found a way to smell seductive and flirty but in a totally unique way. It smells like a vintage red lipstick stuffed inside a clutch. There's rose, musk, and sichuan pepper to add even more romance. And there's even a plasticy hint of latex... because ofc there is!"—BG

One Cosmo editor says: "I'm one of those people who tries to go as long as humanly possible without washing my hair. And when my strands need a refresh but I don't feel like dousing my hair in dry shampoo, I reach for this powdery hair perfume from Crown Affair. Unlike traditional fragrances, it’s alcohol-free and packed with hydrators like glycerin and aloe leaf extract to keep my hair soft and smooth."—JH

    Best Chanel Powdery Perfume

    Chanel Chance Eau Tendre

    Chance Eau Tendre

One Cosmo editor says: "Chanel is basically synonymous with powder perfumes, and Chance eau Tendre is basically Chanel’s most citrusy, fresh scent, per our testing. But don’t let the fruitiness fool you—this could so easily be worn year-round, for either day or night. The added musk and rose really balances it all out and leaves you smelling like you just took the best fresh shower."—BG

How to choose a powdery perfume:

    shape

Look for a fragrance with different notes

Watteau says that just like adding a touch of sea salt to chocolate to bring out its flavor, choosing a fragrance with contrasting notes will help it to really shine.“Powdery notes are fluffy, enveloping a super soft and comforting feeling if they’re well balanced, but without this element of contrast it can become dense and heavy or dry and suffocating,” Watteau says. She recommends going for something with a complementary green, citrus, or woody note to allow the fragrance to “breathe” and become more dimensional.

Consider other scent families you enjoy

Powdery perfumes have evolved in recent years and because of this, many more fragrances that fit into the powder category than ever before. That means if you like florals, earthy scents, spicy fragrances, or even deep, more mysterious scents, you'll be able to find a powdery perfume for your vibe. I recommend to shop by your your primary fragrance category first, and then look for words like "soft" "smooth" or "powdery" in the description.
