Collagen, the reason your skin looks bouncy and youthful, starts slowly going away after you turn 25. Hence, your skin starts to sag and get wrinkles over time. The answer seems simple, though, right? Just get yourself a collagen face cream and boom, you're golden. But it's not that easy. Topical collagen can't penetrate your skin's surface, so it really just acts as a moisturizer to make your skin look healthier and more hydrated, says dermatologist Kristina Collins, MD. Don't get me wrong, that's never a bad thing. But if you wanna actually preserve what you have and try to create more collagen, you're gonna have to invest in collagen-boosting skincare, like formulas with retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide, peptides, and AHAs.

So, what collagen cream works the best? Well, it really all depends on what your skincare goals are. Those looking for a serious anti-aging cocktail should definitely look to moisturizers packed with ingredients to synthesize new collagen formation in your skin. But if you've already got a lot of collagen in your skin (lucky), maybe you just want a lil boost of hydration, and a formula loaded with collagen and other hydrators like hyaluronic acid will be best for you. Don't worry—we've vetted hundreds of moisturizers over the years and picked the top 12 to help increase collagen in your skin for a smooth, firm face way past your natural collagen's expiration date.

Our top picks for the best collagen creams of 2025:

To figure out which formula is best for you, I chatted with Dr. Collins, as well as board-certified dermatologists Michelle Henry, MD, and Karan Lal, MD, and consulted multiple Cosmo beauty editors on their favorites (they test legit everything, remember?). Keep scrolling for the full list of the best collagen creams below, personalized based on skin type, ingredients, and more—along with answers from the experts on how to choose the collagen cream for you and more.

InnBeauty Project Extreme Cream

Extreme Cream

Pros

  • Cosmo Holy Grail Beauty Award winner
  • Combines peptides and retinol to signal collagen production

Cons

  • A bit heavy for oily and acne-prone skin potentially

Winner of the best wrinkle cream in Cosmo's Holy Grail Beauty Awards, the InnBeauty Project Extreme Cream basically has it all for anyone looking to combine their anti-aging and moisturizing step. One Cosmo editor says: “I’m convinced that with this in tow, I’ll never get wrinkles. Why? Because it’s got peptides, retinol, and ceramides to do some major line-smoothing and collagen-boosting.” —BETH GILLETTE, BEAUTY EDITOR

Ultra Light Moisturizer

Pros

  • A favorite among professional aestheticians and doctors
  • One of the most lightweight yet hydrating moisturizers we've tested

Cons

  • A few reviewers found it too expensive for what it is

If you've been inside a dermatologist's office, you've probably seen bottles of Alastin's products before. The brand is highly regarded by experts, especially after professional treatments, because it's gentle yet packed with effective actives. This moisturizer is no exception and a hero in the line. Utilizing the brand's TriHex technology, which combines multiple types of peptides to stimulate collagen production, this cream gently hydrates and soothes the skin.

One Cosmo editor says: “I got hooked on this lotion after a derm recommended it to me to help enhance the results of microneedling. Turns out, it’s the perfect everyday moisturizer for stimulating collagen, thanks to a blend of peptides and hydrating silver mushroom extract. It’s also incredibly lightweight, so excellent for oily skin types like mine.”—LAUREN BALSAMO, BEAUTY DIRECTOR

Best Collagen Cream for Acne-Prone Skin

Dieux Air Angel Gel Cream

Air Angel Gel Cream

Pros

  • Doesn't contain any common pore-clogging ingredients
  • Sinks into skin fast

Cons

  • Might not be hydrating enough for very-dry skin

Not all collagen creams have to be thick and oily. Air Angel from Dieux has a whipped, gel texture that absorbs into skin quickly without sacrificing major hydration. We've got glycerin, squalane, urea, and collagen-rich amino acids to thank for that—all of which add seriously lightweight moisture to your skin that won't aggravate acne-prone skin.

One Cosmo editor says: “My acne-prone skin breaks out over a lot of moisturizers, especially rich, collagen-boosting ones. But not Air Angel. This gel-cream seriously hydrates my skin but never feels heavy and didn't break me out a single time (and I've used up two full bottles)."—BG

Resveratrol-Lift Retinol Alternative Firming Cashmere Cream

Pros

  • Feels more like a serum than a moisturizer, which our editor loved
  • Makes skin feel super hydrated

Cons

  • Doesn't use any collagen boosters

Here's the thing about resveratrol: It's an antioxidant found in red grapes that's got major anti-inflammatory properties and helps protect against UV-induced oxidative stress. Basically, it's powerful for keeping your skin majorly healthy and plump, helping to fight off fine lines. Combined in this cream with moisturizing hyaluronic acid and collagen, it's a fab hydrator that also makes your skin look firmer over time.

One Cosmo editor says: "I love this lightweight serum for my acne-prone skin and when I need a major boost of hydration. It's loaded with a blend of resveratrol and vegan collagen for a load of anti-aging benefits. Plus, it's great for morning or overnight use, or both!"—JASMINE HYMAN, ASSISTANT BEAUTY EDITOR

Instafacial Emulsion Retinopro Growth Factor Night Cream

Pros

  • Packed with both growth factors and peptides to increase collagen production
  • Sinks in without leaving a greasy residue

Cons

  • Extremely expensive (but a lot less than an in-office treatment, ofc)

Jason Diamond, MD, is one of the most famous plastic surgeons in the entire world and is known for the work he does with celebrities. But if you can't get into an appointment with him, his Metacine line is a good second choice. We specifically love this cream that's formulated with both growth factors (fantastic for smoothing, plumping, and firming, as well as soothing inflammation), as well as peptides to promote collagen synthesis. I wouldn't call it a face lift in a bottle, but it's probably the closest you could get.

One Cosmo editor says: "This has all the key ingredients for collagen production, including retinoids, growth factors, and peptides. It’s the perfect night cream for anyone who wants to wake up with plump and juicy skin.”—LB

Pros

  • Most affordable on this list
  • Very lightweight cream
  • Contains both topical collagen *and* collagen-boosting peptides

Cons

  • Not as moisturizing as others we've tested

This cream is loaded with brightening niacinamide (a collagen booster) and firming peptides ("the building blocks of collagen," says board-certified dermatologist Karan Lal, MD) that help trigger extra collagen and elastin production with use.

One Cosmo editor says: “This collagen cream was one of the first formulas I bought (I love drugstore skincare), and it still holds up as one of my faves."—MARISA PETRARCA, CONTRIBUTING BEAUTY WRITER

    Pros

    • Gentle formula that doesn't contain any strong actives or essential oils
    • Calms irritated skin with allantoin and colloidal oatmeal

    Cons

    • Might not be moisturizing enough for very-dry skin

If you have sensitive skin and want some gentle firming and smoothing, meet this rich cream from First Aid Beauty, which has all the essentials to soothe potentially irritated skin: niacinamide, colloidal oatmeal, and allantoin (a skin-softening ingredient found in the comfrey plant). It’s also spiked with moisturizing collagen to temporarily plump up your skin, along with firming peptides to encourage collagen production over time.

One shopper says: “I started using this, and I already love this brand for being sensitive-skin friendly, but they are super effective. The cream firms while repairing and deeply hydrating your skin. Waking up after a thick p.m. application will have you looking brand new.”

      Protini Polypeptide Firming Moisturizer
      Credit: Drunk Elephant

      Pros

      • Two-time Cosmo Readers' Choice Beauty Award winner
      • Air-tight push-pump packaging is so much better than a typical jar, IMO

      Cons

      • Not the most advanced anti-aging formula

The key to getting firmer skin, according to dermatologist Karan Lal, MD, is a collagen cream like this one from Drunk Elephant. The lightweight gel-cream moisturizer uses nine peptides (!) that tell your fibroblasts (i.e., skin cells that make collagen) to go into overdrive and produce more collagen and elastin, says Dr. Lal. Which means slathering on this cream every night for at least six weeks can potentially lead to tighter, healthier-looking skin.

One Cosmo reader says: “This is so hydrating and leaves my skin glowing."

        Pros

        • Uses retinol to promote collagen (one of the best anti-aging ingredients out there)
        • Available at drugstores

        Cons

        • Could be slightly irritating for very sensitive skin

This hydrating cream is a collagen-making machine, all thanks to the formula’s added retinol. FYI: Retinoids increase cell turnover and speed up collagen production, which, in turn, subtly plumps fine lines and wrinkles over time. Just note that although this cream contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate and vitamin E to soothe, it can still lead to some dryness and sensitivity at first. So make sure to start slowly by layering it over a hydrating serum or moisturizer one night a week for one week, two nights a week for two weeks, then three nights a week indefinitely.

One shopper says: “So hydrating and soothing! Bonus: Bright, plump, smooth, young, fresh skin! I will NEVER use anything else. EVER! Never sticky. It absorbs quickly, irons out fine lines and wrinkles, and destroys the ones that try to creep up on you.”

          Pros

          • Extremely lightweight with a velvety finish

          Cons

          • The top of the jar is small, so it can be hard to dig your fingers in (especially if you have long nails)

Lots of collagen creams are filled with rich moisturizers, which is great for dry skin, but can feel greasy and heavy on oily skin. Enter: Eadem’s lightweight cream that combines collagen-boosting niacinamide and peptides with barrier-repairing ceramides to plump up your skin without leaving an oily residue. It also mixes in some squalane, a lightweight moisturizer naturally found in our skin, to give your face a little hydration (bc even oily skin needs it).

One Cosmo editor says: "This has been my go-to moisturizer before makeup for years. Not only does it prime my skin, making it look hydrated and soft before makeup application, but it really helps soothe and protect my skin too. There's also zero pilling with my SPF or foundation. Freakin' love."—BG

              What does collagen cream do?

              line break

Collagen cream can hydrate your skin and help smooth fine lines and wrinkles, depending on the type of formula you choose. If your collagen cream only contains moisturizers along with its collagen, it's ultimately just a moisturizer. Why? Because collagen molecules are "way too large to be absorbed into the skin," says board-certified dermatologist Kristina Collins, MD. "You can think of it as an elephant trying to walk into an anthill—it's not going to happen."

But (!) creams that are also formulated with collagen-boosting ingredients, like peptides, vitamin C, retinol, and AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids, like glycolic and lactic acids) can promote collagen production and smoother skin over time. Which brings us to…

              Do collagen creams actually work?

              line break

Whether or not collagen creams actually work depends on what benefits you’re hoping for. For example: If you're looking for a collagen cream that softens fine lines and wrinkles, you need a formula filled with ingredients proven to promote collagen production—which, sadly, doesn't include topical collagen. Dermatologist Michelle Henry, MD, suggests looking for a cream packed with peptides, which have a tiny molecular size (unlike topical collagen) that can "get across the skin barrier to stimulate collagen.” Other collagen-boosting MVPs? Vitamin C (which also brightens), AHAs (which also smooth), and/or retinol (which does literally everything above).

But if your main skin goal is to have it look and feel softer and plumper, then any collagen cream will help, since topical collagen essentially acts like a moisturizer. And, when paired with other humectants (i.e., ingredients that pull water from the air and into the skin), like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and urea, your collagen cream can even temporarily soften and “smooth” fine lines, resulting in a more ~supple~ and glow-y look.

              Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

              Does collagen cream tighten skin?

              line break

Some collagen creams tighten skin, specifically those that contain “hyaluronic acid, peptides, retinoids, vitamin C, and antioxidants, like niacinamide,” says Dr. Collin. Why? Because topical collagen can’t tighten skin on its own (remember—just a moisturizer!), but added anti-agers, like the combo above, are proven to firm skin and boost collagen production over time.

How to choose the best collagen cream:

              line break

              Assess your goals.

Are you looking to smooth your wrinkles and help prevent future fine lines? Look for a collagen cream with retinol, which will increase the cell turnover in your skin to trigger new collagen and elastin production. But if you’re just in the market for a hydrating cream with small and subtle anti-aging effects, choose a collagen cream with peptides to help trigger new collagen production, or grab a collagen cream with hyaluronic acid to temporarily plump lines and give your skin a dewy finish.

              Pick the collagen you want.

Collagen can be synthetically made in the lab, but it’s often sourced from animals or fish (often called “marine” collagen). Neither one is necessarily better than the other—it just depends on your personal preference. “If you are vegan or avoiding animal-based products, you should look for synthetic collagen sources,” says Collins. Usually, the product packaging or its ingredients list will note if the collagen in the formula is vegan or plant-based, so make sure to read the writing—or just follow the breakdown above, where I noted which formulas were synthetic.

              Think about your skin type.

Once you’ve decided which type of collagen you want to try, along with your ~skin goals,~ figure out whether your skin is dry, sensitive, oily, or combination—which, ideally, you’re already doing any time you choose a new skincare product. If you’re working with oily skin, for example, you may want a lightweight collagen gel-cream, says Dr. Henry, while someone with really dry skin may lean towards a richer, thicker collagen treatment.
