Why Is Everyone So Obsessed With Body Sprays? Let Me Show You With These 10 Picks

All the cool people I know have ditched perfume in favor of them.

By

If you walked onto the Cosmopolitan office floor, you'd immediately know which desk was mine. It's cluttered with bottles upon bottles of some of the most expensive perfumes (Le Labo, Byredo, Chanel, Dior, Krigler, Loewe—they've all got a space on my desk-turned-vanity). But at the current state of the fragrance boom, I'm metaphorically swiping them all away in drawers in favor of body sprays. It felt a little weird at first—I'm a beauty editor with a stash of the best perfumes in the world; why am I opting for the same fragrance format I chose when I was a broke teenager?

Well, if you haven't been paying attention, body sprays are majorly trending right now. For a lot of reasons! The difference between body spray and perfume is largely based on the formulas. "Body sprays—or sometimes called body mists—have a much lower fragrance concentration than perfumes and are meant to be applied liberally all over your body," fragrance formulator Rosie Jane Johnston previously told Cosmo. "Body sprays tend to contain more water than alcohol, making them a lighter, more casual way to wear fragrance," she added. But perfumes are basically the opposite: They're chock-full of fragrance oils and are designed to be spritzed sparingly for a "longer-lasting, more complex scent experience."

With that, the pros for body sprays are pretty damn strong. Obviously, they're significantly more affordable than a spensy perfume bottle. For the fragrance-obsessed looking to create their own scent wardrobe for all of their various moods, it's much easier on your wallet to curate a body mist collection. Body sprays are also much softer, making them a better option for those who are sensitive to strong scents. (However, based on my testing, there are many that have a surprisingly strong scent throw and lasting power.) This also makes them a great option for perfume layering to develop your own scent profile or stack scents for even more longevity and intensity.

If you've also spritzed your Touchland Hand Sanitizer on your hands and wished you could spray it all over your entire body, you're gonna love these. Touchland took their cult-fave scents and reimagined them into these body and hair mists that are perfect for storing in your bag and spraying on whenever you want a light wash of scent. But, ofc, it's also great for your skin and hair, thanks to the formula's blend of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and panthenol.

There's a wide range of scents depending on your vibes—Peachy Lychee is bright and yummy for summer, Rich Pistachio is a gourmand dream (and my fave), and Cashmere Woods smells like a lot of the expensive fragrances I have in my collection. But truly, with seven scents, there's something for everyone.

Oui the People makes some of my go-to body products (many of which have won Cosmo beauty awards). So I wasn't surprised when their newest launch, a yummy-smelling hair and body mist, quickly made its way onto this list. It's packed with French mineral water (which is naturally loaded with magnesium and calcium to help hydrate skin), so it feels so lightweight when I spritz it onto my skin and hair. One caveat: It does contain alcohol, so if you're prone to dryness, especially in your hair, keep that in mind. But I haven't had a problem on my fine hair.

There are two scents to choose from: Orange Blossom, a fresh citrus, and Souk Honey, a warm, gourmand. My go-to for summer has been Orange Blossom—it's light and airy, but it also pairs well with most of my summer perfumes.

PerfumeTok has some strong opinions, but one most everyone agrees on is how damn good Sol De Janeiro's Body Mists are. "Seriously though, fragrance mists usually don't last long, yet I can still catch a faint whiff of this hours after I spritz it on," says contributing beauty editor Mary Honkus. It's pretty reminiscent of a standard eau de parfum, actually. "It manages to leave a big impact on the skin without veering into headache-causing territory," Honkus adds.

Here's the thing: The Sol de Janeiro fragrance mists come in about a bajillion scents depending on your vibes. "While it was difficult to name only one of Sol de Janeiro's ~delectable~ fragrance mists as the best overall, Cheirosa '62 cinched the top spot because it perfectly encapsulates the essence of joyful, summer days," wrote Honkus when she ranked every Sol de Janeiro perfume. "It smells warm, nostalgic, and familiar (which makes sense considering it's the same scent found in the iconic Brazilian Bum Bum Cream)."

"I love that Glossier ventured out from their pH-changing and very curated perfumes and into the world of easy-to-wear, casual body mists," says assistant beauty editor Jasmine Hyman. "The new mists are so easy to spritz on for the days when you don't wanna go too heavy on the scents, but still wanna smell amazing."

Currently, these come in two scents (Orange Blossom Neroli and Sandstone Cypres). "Both of the scents are the epitome of summer in a bottle, but if I had to choose a favorite, it would be Orange Blossom Neroli," says Hyman. "And if you really wanna amp up the notes, pair it with the coinciding body wash."

Longest-Lasting Body Spray

Kayali Vanilla 28 Body Spray

Forget everything I said about body mists being "light," "breezy," and "airy." Because this one rivals full-on eau de parfums with how long it lasts on my skin and the sillage (aka how far the scent travels—like when you walk into a room and can smell a person down the hall). The O.G. Kayali Vanilla 28 perfume is one of my all-time favorites (and a huge Cosmo reader fave, btw), and this is just a little less heavy. It still fills the room and stays on my skin and clothes for eight or more hours, but it's way easier to layer with other scents. I'm also keen to spraying on the perfume in the mornings and using this to re-apply throughout the day.

Best Body Spray for Layering

Phlur Vanilla Skin Body Mist

Phlur is known for their unique takes on scent (Missing Person will always and forever be iconic), so ofc, their body sprays also do just that. They can stand on their own as lighter versions of a standard perfume (Beach Skin is the best for that salty, summery vibe), but they're especially great for scent layering. I love adding a little bit of Vanilla Skin to my woodsy perfumes, and it just makes me smell ever-so-slightly sweeter and softer. Or I'll pair Mango Mood with other fruity scents to give them a stronger tropical aura. I legit have endless pairings and scent combos with a few of these in my collection.

"If you want to smell like a fresh vacation shower at all times, Ouai St. Barths is that scent," says assistant beauty editor Jasmine Hyman. Most body sprays come in large bottles (because they require a lot more spritzing than a traditional perfume), but that can make them nearly impossible to travel with. But! This travel size makes it hella easy.

"I use all of Ouai's hair products to give me a holistic signature scent (like their shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner spray), so when I found out they also made their beloved hair products in the form of scents, I was elated," says Hyman. "I've been using the body mist alongside my St. Barths leave-in and I get sooo many questions on what makes me smell so tropical and coconut-y all the time."

Beauty director Lauren Balsamo is often skeptical about fragrances, but when she waltzed into the office raving about this one, she put it on my radar big time. It's made with 100 percent natural fragrance oils—not synthetic ones—that she loves for her sensitive skin and nose. There's a lil bit of alcohol, yes, but otherwise, it's filled with argan oil and jojoba esters to offset any potential dryness.

Although these come in four scents (Vanilla Vibezzz, Topless Tangerine, Golden Hour, and Bohemian Fig), Balsamo and I are both obsessed with the fig version. FWIW, fig notes are a major summer perfume trend. We're just really on trend, what can we say?

Unlike most other body sprays on this list, this one is actually fantastic to use on your skin and hair because the formula is alcohol free. Alcohol, which helps distribute the scent evenly in a perfume and acts as a carrier for fragrance oils, can be super drying and irritating on your skin. But Rare Beauty formulated their body and hair mist without it, opting instead for niacinamide, biotin, and glycerin for a hydrating concoction that also happens to smell super good.

I'm obsessed with the original scent, Find Comfort, because it really is so warm, soft, and soothing. It smells like an amalgamation of most of the high-end perfumes I love. But for summer, the citrus-forward Awaken Confidence version is bright and fresh.

So, it's absolutely wild that this body mist from Being Frenshe by Ashley Tisdale is the most affordable on this entire list. For one, it's not just a body spray—it's also a fantastic hair perfume and an even better linen spray. (Fun fact: I spray this on my sofa before people come over, and I always get compliments on how good my apartment smells.) Plus, the scents are really luxe. Salty is exactly how it sounds: Musky, airy, and fresh—reminiscent of a Northeastern beach town. But there are eight variations to try, all of which are as complex as more high-end versions.
