Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco have so much to look forward to. On top of their fairytale engagement (complete with a Taco Bell picnic, no less), the pair is gearing up to release their joint album, I Said I Love You First, on March 21.

They were friends and musical collaborators for a minute before they became one of the cutest celebrity couples on our social feeds, and in a new interview with Rolling Stone, they revealed why they kept the early days of their romance so private.

I definitely tried to keep it private for a while, because it’s a lot. I remember us having a conversation about whether we were going to keep dating or not. We just had to make sure, because she’s as big as it gets and it’s a big undertaking,” Benny explained to the outlet, admitting that they took things one day at a time in their relationship.

He added, “It’s not like you date someone for a few weeks and then you’re like, ‘Oh, okay, bye.’ So we just took it slow. Then it started becoming such a hard thing, because it was like, ‘I don’t want to just have dinner inside with you and have all of our dates inside and we’re wearing a mask the entire date, and then we have to go hide in a car.’”

Fans started speculating that Benny and Selena were an item in July 2023, when he was spotted in photos from the Rare Beauty founder’s 31st birthday party. In August 2023, Sel dropped her song “Single Soon,” which was produced by Benny, but it wouldn’t be until December 2023 when she confirmed their relationship status with a series of Instagram Story posts and comments.

Nearly a year after they went public with their romance, Selena revealed that she and Benny got engaged by posting a pic of her stunning Marquise diamond engagement ring.

During the interview, Benny gushed, “I was so sure that I was gonna marry her. I just knew. It’s just a very different feeling. I know when Sel wakes up, she’s thinking in her head, How can I make this day as good as I can for Benny? And I know I’m waking up and saying, ‘How can I make this day as good for Sel?’ We’re just thinking about each other.”

As for their wedding planning progress, Selena emphasized that she and her fiancé are focused on dropping their album, which features “Sunset Blvd” and their collaboration with Gracie Abrams, “Call Me When You Break Up.”

“I think every day she’s planned a new wedding in her head. We’re very much ‘take it one day at a time’-type of people. We’re still not over this moment,” Benny said, as Sel added, “I genuinely feel like this is such a special time that we get to apply it to this album and really just pour our heart into it, and completely translate what we feel and bring it to the world. That’s my main focus right now, at least.”

Love. This. For. Them.
