Anna Camp is not letting strangers’ comments on her love life get to her. The Pitch Perfect star recently spoke up and defended her newfound romance with writer and stylist Jade Whipkey, which also marks her first public relationship with a woman.
When LGBTQ+ outlet Pink News dropped footage of Anna and Jade’s red carpet debut at the Los Angeles premiere of Bride Hard, the comments section was flooded with critiques surrounding their age gap. The headline on the social post revealed that Anna is 18 years Jade’s senior, which sparked a debate.
“Just cuz they are gay doesnt excuse the weird ahh age gap,” one person wrote, while another said, “Regardless of celebrity or gender: if a 42 year old is with a 24 year old, it's about power or control, even on a subconscious level.”
Other folks came to Anna and Jade’s defense. “Many don’t understand that being a controversially young girlfriend is the lesbian dream,” one person joked, while another referenced Anna’s Pitch Perfect co-star, Rebel Wilson: “Almost every pitch perfect bella coming out as a queer is so important to me.”
Anna then left a comment to defend her and Jade’s relationship. “Thought I’d jump on here since I follow @pinknews and just say I’ve dated men exactly my age and Jade is FAR more mature than any of them,” the You alum started.
She explained, “We have more in common than anyone else I’ve ever dated and can literally talk about anything and everything ♥️ Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I’m wishing everyone well :) Especially this Pride month 🌈.”
Another person even pointed out age gap relationships have a different dynamic in queer relationships, saying, “Age gaps in queer relationships are very common and don’t often elicit the same power imbalances as hetero relationships given we live in a patriarchal society that prioritises men being in power and women being objectified.”
They continued, “Healthy queer relationships don’t prescribe to those heteronormative gender dynamics. 👌 these two humans look so bloody happy and I’m ecstatic that more and more women are discovering who they are and finding true happiness ♥️.”
Before soft-launching her romance with Jade earlier this year, Anna married Michael Mosley from 2010 to 2013 before she wed her Pitch Perfect co-star, Skylar Astin, from 2016 to 2019. People has also reported that Anna was romantically linked to drummer Michael Johnson from 2020 to 2024.
