Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels has a new documentary out (simply called Lorne) and it features a ton of past and present cast members. But not on the list? Pete Davidson, which is kind of a shock as he’s one of the most successful comedians to come out of the show in recent years.

Sooo, why wasn’t he included in the doc? Director Morgan Neville told People that, essentially, he interviewed John Mulaney and then decided he didn’t have room for Pete.

“I interviewed so many people for the film, and at a certain point, after I’d interviewed [John] Mulaney and he had said everything he had said, I just didn’t know where we were gonna put more voices,” he said. “It just felt like it was full, you know?”

Morgan also explained that Pete wasn’t free when they were first filming the documentary, and he didn’t know “where anything’s gonna fit” with so many SNL cast members down to participate. “That was the hard part,” he explained. “It was like an embarrassment of riches, that you could interview a thousand people about Lorne Michaels. So many people have stories.”

Without mentioning Pete specifically, Morgan also made it clear that the doc is about Lorne, not the celebs in it. “I was just trying to distill his essence into a film,” he said. “A lot of those stories are not about Lorne; they’re about those people. I just wanted to make sure I was staying on Lorne’s story and not other people’s stories. Because there are stories everywhere and it’s huge. There are thousand-page books about the show. So, it’s really just trying to get that essence of what makes him tick that I was just zeroed in on.”

Pete hasn’t spoken about not being in the doc, for what it’s worth, but stay tuned?
