There are many loose threads to tie up before Outlander airs its grand finale on May 8. One of them is, undoubtedly, getting more closure on the Claire and Lord John Grey fiasco. As a refresher, Claire and Lord John Grey married after hearing Jamie was dead. They did it to protect Claire, who was suspected as a spy. In a moment of grief, they had sex. And then, of course, they learned that Jamie was not actually dead. Awkward for all involved!
Turns out, Jamie is still not over the whole thing. Sam Heughan teased tension over this exact issue during a visit I made to the Outlander Scotland set in June 2024. He said, "It's real friction f0r Jamie. Claire thought Jamie was dead, and to protect her and, I guess, mourning the loss of Jamie somehow, they slept together. I still don't know why Jamie's friend and his wife slept together, but it creates a great rift between Jamie and John Grey."
Caitriona Balfe said during that same visit that she and John Grey both deal with the repercussions of their choices. "Both she and John bear the brunt of Jamie's grumpiness," she said. "If I was in Jamie's position, I'm not sure I wouldn't be a little bit mad."
In an exclusive first-look clip from this week's episode, Jamie and Claire have it out about the marriage that never should have been. The two of them are in the middle of an argument, and the Lord John Grey of it all comes back to rear its ugly head.
Here's the full transcript of the scene:
Claire: This doesn't involve you.
Jamie: I dinna mean to be involved. I dinna mean for you to be involved with John Grey at all, but it's a wee bit late for that.
Claire: You know what happened, and you know why it happened.
Jamie: I do ken what happened. He laid you down on the floor, he spread your legs, and he swived ya. Do you think I ever hear that man's name and not think about it?
Claire: I thought we were done with that.
Jamie: Did I once tell you I'm a jealous man? And did I tell you I begrudged every hour you spent in another man's bed?
Claire: You did.
Jamie: I meant it. I still mean it. But you'll do as you damn please. God knows you always do. But don't pretend you dinna ken what I feel about it.
Claire: You can't avoid John forever. If William is involved with him, so are you.
Jamie: Damn William!
So, yeah, clearly this is still not resolved. There are only so many episodes left of the season, so I hope they get some sort of resolution about this. As Claire says, as long as William is in the picture, the three of them are going to have to put up with each other. Did they have couples therapy back in the 1700s? Asking for these three.
