There has never been a better time to sign up for AMC A-List (or Regal Unlimited. Or Cinemark Movie Club. Moviepass…we still got some thoughts). In just a few months, we’re going to have a historical film event happening all over the world and you’re not going to want to miss it. And, no, we’re not talking about seeing Matt Damon rightfully fight the gods to make his way back to Anne Hathaway in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
For some strange reason, high-level CEOs who get paid way more than us decided, “Hey, let’s take out two of the biggest and most bro-y sequels of the year on the same day.” But now, lucky for us, we have Avengers: Dunesday! That is obviously what we’re calling the weird phenomena of having both Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three coming out on the same day: December 18, 2026.
Apologies to everyone who will dragged out by their families to watch these as their Christmas or Hanukkah blockbuster movie picks of the year. Even as a Marvel girlie who has never really Dune-d before, the choice of having Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evan’s highly anticipated returns to the MCU going against Timothée Chalamet’s much-needed apology tour happen at the same time is…a choice….
It’s been confirmed that Dune: Part Three will take over IMAX screens that weekend (at least in the United States), so fans who are hoping to catch Avengers: Doomsday on some of the biggest screens will have to wait and hope for a later run in the format.
For the Warner Bros. Pictures-backed Dune: Part Three, it will not only follow on the massive box office success of recent Oscar-winner Sinners, but could also either be one of the last releases for the company before its big merger with Netflix or one of the first under the new conglomerate, marking a historical moment for either its legacy or its future.
Either way, it’s a major win for movie theaters as two major franchises return to the big screen. So grab your popcorn bucket (maybe leave the worm at home though?) and get ready for another wild weekend at the movies. Maybe I’ll even see you there!
