The entire plot of One Piece revolves around Luffy and the Straw Hat pirates setting sail to find the One Piece—a mysterious treasure hidden somewhere on the Grand Line that pretty much every single pirate is obsessed with finding. We're two seasons into the show and the Straw Hats are pretty far from finding the One Piece (they're only a few islands deep into the Grand Line, after all!), but if you're looking for answers, we have a few things to discuss. There's a lot of mystery surrounding the One Piece, but here's what we do know.
The One Piece Is Gol D. Roger's Treasure
Which we find out in the first moments of the TV series, when the legendary pirate king announces that he's hidden the One Piece and it's ready to be found. Direct quote: "You want to know where my treasure is? I'll tell you. Wealth. Fame. Power. I found everything this world has to offer. Free yourselves! Take to the seas! My treasure is yours to find."
If You Find It, You're King of the Pirates
It's not necessarily an official title, but finding the One Piece is so impressive, all other pirates WILL take note.
It Originally Belonged to Joy Boy
According to the One Piece fandom site, the treasure was originally found by a man named Joy Boy during the Void Century, around 800 years prior to the events in One Piece. Joy Boy left it on an island at the very end of the Grand Line, where it was later discovered by Gol D. Roger.
The One Piece Is...Funny?
So funny that when Gol D. Roger and his pirates found it, they started to laugh and even named the island Laugh Tale. Which could explain why he was laughing so uproariously while talking about the One Piece right before his public execution.
Yes, It's Actual Treasure
According to the One Piece Podcast, creator Eiichiro Oda was asked this by fellow manga artist Momoko Sakura: "The One Piece, it's not something like 'the growth your heart went through,' right?" Oda answered "Hahaha, no no, I won't be pulling off some kind of Wizard of Oz thing like that. After having gone through an adventure like that, it wouldn't be fair to not actually give them a reward."
The One Piece's Contents Are Hidden in the Sea
Eiichiro Oda wrote down what the One Piece is for the very first time, then sealed the information in a box, and dropped it into the ocean.
A narrator in this official video says, "What is the One Piece? That answer has been determined since the very beginning. The secret never written down. Kept in the mind of creator Eiichiro Oda. At long last, it has been inscribed on paper. Until the whole story is revealed, the truth will rest far beyond anyone’s reach. At the bottom of the ocean."
The video ends with the writing, "The One Piece does exist”
Does Finding Out What the One Piece Is Matter?
On the one hand, yes! It's the entire point of Luffy and the Straw Hat pirates' adventures. But on the other hand, this series is all about the journey getting there, and even if Oda did pull a "the growth your heart went through" situation on fans, it would be worth it. Buuuut on the other-other hand, literally need to know more than I need anything, so!
