One Piece introduced a new twist in the very first episode of Season 2: infamous pirate Gol D. Roger had a son. And he asked Marine Vice Admiral Garp to raise him right before his death, saying “I have one final favor to ask. I have a son. I need you to find him, care for him, keep him safe.”
Between that bombshell and Luffy sharing the exact same laugh as Roger in the face of death, there’s some natural speculation among viewers (who aren’t familiar with the manga series) that Luffy is Roger’s son. But nope!
Luffy’s father is none other than Monkey D. Dragon (the tattooed founder of the Revolutionary Army), while Gol D. Roger’s son is none other than Portgas D. Ace.
Ace is the “sworn brother” of Luffy, and will become a major character in the third season of One Piece. In fact, actor Xolo Maridueña has already been cast.
Ace and Luffy have a lot in common, by the way: not only are they both fans of a wide-brim hat, they’ve both eaten Devil Fruit and have extraordinary powers. Ace’s special abilities? According to the One Piece fandom site, he can “create, control, and transform his body into fire” and “unleash massive amounts of fire for large-scale damage, as well as utilize small precision attacks.”
Can’t wait to see Ace and Luffy together in Season 3 (which yes, is incoming on Netflix).
