An author bonds with his grown-up daughter on a college campus where they both work. That’s exactly the kind of heartwarming, funny-but-why-am-I-crying premise you’d expect from the creator of Ted Lasso. Bill Lawrence and co-showrunner Matt Tarses’ new comedy series Rooster starring Steve Carrell as the author in question hits HBO and HBO Max this spring. If you need a syllabus to follow along, look no further.

In addition to Carrell, the show stars Charly Clive (Pure) as his character’s daughter. Her husband, played by Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso), recently left her for a grad student played by Lauran Tsai (Legion). Danielle Deadwyler (Station Eleven), Annie Mumalo (Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar), Connie Britton (Nashville), John C. McGinley (Scrubs), and more also appear as various parents and faculty members.

While the author came to school to be there for his daughter and her crisis, he ends up reinventing himself in the image of his best selling book’s adventurous, brave and bold protagonist Rooster. What else is college for, you know?

When does Rooster premiere?

The first episode of Rooster, titled “Release the Brown Fat,” airs on March 8, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max at 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

How many episodes are there in Rooster?

Rooster will have ten episodes, released weekly on Sunday nights from March to May. As far as I know, the episodes are all in the half hour range. (I live in fear of 75 minute long sitcom episodes… something that shows like The Bear and Ted Lasso have allowed to exist. Hopefully Rooster won’t do that to us!!!!)
