  • Will everyone survive this season finale unscathed?

What began as a mundane job that barely had any action has now gotten FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) in a whole world of trouble. And, in The Night Agent Season 3, he finds himself going head-to-head with the head honcho himself, U.S. President Richard Hagan (Ward Horton), as well as the First Lady Jenny Hagan (Jennifer Morrison). Warning: Major spoilers ahead!

With the help of The Financial Register journalist Isabel De Leon (Genesis Rodriguez), financial analyst Jay Batra (Suraj Sharma), and Secret Service agent Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola), Peter uncovers a major money laundering conspiracy that involves the Hagans. But going up against the highest executive power in the nation, of course, hasn’t been easy—especially when Peter’s own partner, Adam (David Lyons), is at the President’s beck and call working against him.

Does the team manage to break the story before the Hagans cover their tracks? Or will any of them die trying? Here’s exactly how The Night Agent Season 3 ends.

Everyone is on Adam’s hit list.

Now that Isabel has access to the drive her father left, with all the evidence on the transactions that took place through Walcott Capital, the President is scrambling to cover his tracks. And, of course, he’s enlisted his army buddy Adam to do all the dirty work. Adam, trusting that his friend is asking him to do this for the greater good, goes to great lengths to try and take out anyone that the President sends him after. The latest addition to his hit list is Chelsea.

After Chelsea had revealed to the First Lady that she knew about their involvement with shady broker Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum), the President decided she knew too much and had to be killed. So Adam takes Chelsea out for a drive, but almost immediately she senses that something is wrong and sends her location to Peter.

Chelsea tries to play it cool, indulging Adam with his little act that nothing’s about to happen. But when she laughs a little too hard at one of his stories, he realizes that she knows and pulls a gun on her. This leads to a struggle, which leads to a car crash that ends with them upside-down on the side of the road. Once Chelsea is conscious, she tries to grab the gun, but Adam wakes and grabs it first. She, however, manages to escape and run to a nearby barn.

Meanwhile, Peter tries as best as he can to catch up. He spots the crash on the side of the road, then hears gunshots which leads him straight to Chelsea. While ducking out of each other’s range, Peter tells Adam that the Hagans are using him, and that they’ve got solid proof of their illegal dealings with Monroe. This leaves Adam internally questioning his friend, which allows Peter and Chelsea to make a run for it.

Does Isabel finally break the story?

With all the incriminating evidence found in her late estranged father’s drive, Isabel pitches her exposé to her editors at The Financial Register. She and Jay explain everything that’s transpired, and say that in addition to the files on the drive, Chelsea and Jay are willing to go on the record as sources. However, given the high-profile nature of the story and the serious accusations they would be making, the lawyers and the owner of the paper didn’t want to rush it. They need at least a couple of weeks to make sure everything was airtight, but Isabel knew that was too long. The President would have already successfully covered everything up by then, and she and her friends might already be dead.

Then, Isabel gets a bright idea after speaking with Peter. She had one more valuable source to offer her bosses. She asks the editor-in-chief whether getting the private banker from Walcott Capital who handled all these transactions, Freya Myers (Michaela Watkins), on the record would change anything. The chief says that this should be enough for Isabel to get the story out by that evening.

And so, as a last-ditch effort to break the story before it’s too late, Isabel pays Freya Myers a visit at her apartment. Freya tries to call gun-for-hire The Father (Stephen Moyer) to finish the job she’d paid him thrice his fee for, which is to eliminate Isabel. But he refuses, saying that he’s returned all the money she’d paid him. Looking at his adoptive son (Callum Vinson), he says he’s done with that chapter of his life, and is renouncing his killer profession in order to start over. Freya doesn’t take this well, and threatens him and everyone he’s ever loved. The Father doesn’t allow this to shake him, and still turns her down.

Freya Myers runs for her life.

Freya ends up welcoming Isabel into her luxurious apartment, only to turn down any suggestion of her going on the record for the story. She thinks the problem will work itself out and she wouldn’t go to jail because everything would just get swept under the rug, and that’s how things work when powerful people are involved. But Isabel reveals that Monroe was murdered by professionals hired by the President to tie up any loose ends, and that Freya could very well be next. Just then, a knock comes to Freya’s door, and it’s two men who clearly look like more of Hagan’s military buddies.

(In an earlier conversation between Hagan and Adam, when the President was reassuring his buddy that he was doing the right thing, he had also mentioned that Adam wasn’t the only friend whose help he’d enlisted from the old army days. These two certainly fit the bill.)

Sure enough, the two goons break in with their silencers at the ready. Isabel and Freya are able to hide, and Freya eventually abandons Isabel to make a run for it from her private elevator upstairs. The men catch up to what Freya had done and leave the apartment without knowing that Isabel was still there. This gives the journalist a chance to contact Peter and Chelsea. But, before backup can arrive, one of the men gets ahold of Isabel, while the other runs after Freya who tries to escape via Grand Central Station. But then Adam arrives and manipulates the situation. He tells the police officers in the station a fake story, and mobilizes them to help him capture Freya.

Luckily, Chelsea is able to cleverly rescue Isabel, and Peter gets to Freya before Adam does. Chelsea and Isabel head to The Financial Register, and Peter and Freya try to do the same via subway. Of course, Adam’s one step ahead and already knows where the two are headed, and asks the NYPD to block the exits at 28th Street.

Adam comes to his senses.

It was never going to be an easy road to justice. As soon as Freya and Peter arrive at 28th Street, police are waiting for them. But Freya had a trick up her sleeve, knowing a sneaky secret exit out of the station. They still end up getting cornered, with one of Hagan’s men having gotten off the same train as them and tailing them. The two men have a violent confrontation, and things don’t look so good for Peter. But Freya comes to his rescue, and the two manage to make their way out of the station.

The secret exit leads the two to a church, and Freya supports a limping Peter as they try to make their escape to The Financial Register offices. Just when they thought the coast was clear, Adam appears at the church with his gun at the ready. All hope seems to be lost, and the two are at the mercy of Peter’s partner. However, Peter doesn’t back down. He insists that Adam is being used by Hagan, and that he’s willing to die fighting for what he believes is right. Adam sees that Peter means what he says, and in the end lets him and Freya walk away.

Isabel exposes the Hagans on a livestream.

Finally, Peter and Freya make it to The Financial Register. Chelsea helps Peter get the medical care he needs, while Freya goes with Isabel to break the news. They do so via interview which they livestream online. Freya confirms that Walcott Capital became a channel for money laundering and shady deals involving First Lady Jenny Hagan and her nonprofit, and President Richard Hagan’s campaign. She then says she’s willing to spill the beans if Congress and the U.S. Department of Justice are “interested in reaching an understanding” with her a.k.a. cut her a sweet deal. This all reaches the White House, and the Hagans know that the jig is up.

Flash forward to five weeks later…

Practically everyone—even President Hagan—gets a happy ending. Jay ends up on a TV show explaining the whole incident, Chelsea and her fiancé Theo (Zach Appelman) are back to wedding planning, and Isabel is still The Financial Register’s top reporter. Isabel meets up with Peter, and tells him she’s taking a good, long vacation in Barcelona. This seems to inspire something in Peter.

Meanwhile, on the news at a bar, we see a headline saying that President Hagan has pardoned himself and his wife ahead of their Senate conviction, and their family has left the White House. Watching the screen in that same bar is Freya, sipping on a martini. Sitting not too far from her is The Father. She doesn’t recognize him because she’d never seen his face. He puts on a British accent and introduces himself as Henry, while Freya introduces herself as Nina. He buys her a drink, pretending to be interested in her, but covertly pulls a vial out of his pocket which seems to be poison. It’s clear that he took her threats against him and his family seriously. In the end, he makes his way out of the bar, and he and The Son play catch on the boardwalk by the beach.

Is this a set up for The Night Agent Season 4?

Peter takes a walk in Central Park with his boss Aiden Mosley (Albert Jones). Mosley tells him that he’s cleaning house, conducting a review of all night agents to make sure they’re actually reliable and not one of the ex-president’s corrupt recruits. Peter then tells Mosley that he wants to extend his leave. Beyond healing all the wounds he’d incurred on his last mission, he’d also like to take Mosley’s advice and go on a real vacation so that he can come back to the job refreshed and better. Mosley encourages this, but says that he’s already thought of a candidate to replace Peter’s partner. When asked who, Mosley smiles and simply says, “I thought you were taking a break?”

This last episode ties everything neatly into a bow, but also sets up a potential fourth season for a show. New president, new partner, new mission—lots of things to look forward to. We’re certainly hopeful for Season 4!
