Alysa Liu is a lot of things: Olympic gold medalist, person with the coolest hair in the world, and burgeoning style icon.

If you've noticed jewelry on Alysa's teeth when she smiles (which she does A LOT!), that would be her "smiley," aka frenulum piercing, which she literally did herself. Note: the frenulum connects the lips to the gums, and if you pierce it, the ring—depending on its size—hangs down in front of your teeth.

Alysa chatted about her "smiley" while chatting to TMJ4, saying "I pierced it a little over two years ago now. Also, I did it myself." This involved a professional piercing needle and her sister.

"I had my sister hold up my lip, and I was looking in the mirror and I had my piercing needle and then, yeah, I just put it through," she said, adding "Someone called my style 'alternative' and I'd agree with that."

Alysa also spoke about her signature hair halos to Cosmo Sports, saying "My hair has so much meaning. I started doing halos on my hair two years ago. I do one for every year because I like to think of myself as a tree. You know how they have a new ring? It counts their age! I made a deal with my coaches: No one tells me what I’m gonna wear. No one tells me how my hair is gonna be. No one’s gonna try to change me."

Reminder that Alysa just won a gold medal for figure skating, and said post ceremony, "I'm very happy with how I skated. [It was an] unbelievable feeling when I was done skating. And when I was skating — hearing the cheers — and I felt so connected with the audience. I want to be out there again."
