Jean-Luc Baker and British-Spanish skater Olivia Smart have officially taken the enemies-to-lovers trope to new heights at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Okay, so they technically weren’t enemies IRL, but they were longtime friends and on-ice rivals when they competed against each other during the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Now, the rivals became fiancées when they got engaged on Saturday, February 14.
The former Team USA figure skater popped the question on the streets of Milan during a Valentine’s Day date through the city. They announced the news with a joint Instagram post that same day, writing, “It’s always been you.” (@ Heated Rivalry writers’ room, take notes!)
Though Olivia and Jean-Luc have only been dating for almost two years, they’ve been friends and competitive rivals for much longer. “We’ve been best friends at this point for like 11 or 12 years,” Jean-Luc said in a video shared by the Olympics.
He admitted that his romantic feelings for Olivia were so strong, he couldn’t stay silent any longer.
“I remember, like, this feeling in my gut of not being comfortable enough to be at her wedding as a spectator...and I honestly could not live my life not knowing that she knew how I felt about her,” he gushed. Once they got through the free dance competition in Beijing, he knew it was “time to say something.”
Ahead of their engagement, the couple answered a series of questions for the Olympics’ official social media page, where they revealed who said “I love you” first and who takes longer to get ready each morning.
Couldn’t be more obsessed with these two if we tried!
