• Athletes have been reviewing the chocolate lava cakes in the Olympic Village at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
  • The lava cake serves as a spiritual successor to the viral chocolate muffins at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
  • The cake features a warm liquid chocolate center and a hint of powdered sugar on top.

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris saw several athletes emerge as viral stars. Think back to Yusuf Dikec, the Turkish sharpshooter who delivered an effortlessly cool performance with just one hand, or even Rachel Gunn, who—for better or for worse—captivated audiences with her memed around the world breakdancing routine that led to her eventual retirement. But the biggest star from Paris was arguably the chocolate muffins in Olympic Village—and now, the muffins have been upgraded with an ooey gooey makeover for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Athletes in the Olympic Village this year have caused the chocolate lava cakes in the cafeteria to go super viral, days before the Opening Ceremony even kicked off. Unlike the chocolate muffins in Paris, the lava cakes in Milan and Cortina featured a warm, liquid chocolate center that reveals itself when cutting the cake open at its center. Canadian speedskater Courtney Sarault did fans the honors by cutting one open on TikTok, to the tune of 2.9 million views:

Her consensus? “Perhaps better than the viral chocolate muffin...(yes I know it isn’t a muffin”

Canadian ice hockey player Natalie Spooner also gave the lava cake a try and delivered a full review of the food item in an Instagram Reel. “Today on chocolate monster review, we finally found the chocolate lava cake,” she told the camera before cutting it open and taking a molten bite. “This is what I've been waiting for. It's gooey, it's chocolatey. This middle is delicious. This is hitting the spot right now, so I'm gonna give this a 9.1 out of 10.”

While the chocolate lava cake is the most viral food item in the Olympic Village (for now), there's plenty of tasty eats in the cafeteria from lasagna, pizza and more, so TBD on which treat will be the next to hit your FYP.
