Hello, I am here with good news for fans of Spanish figure skater Tomàs-Llorenç Guarino Sabaté/the Despicable Me media franchise: We’re getting an Olympic Minions routine after all. The athlete announced on February 6 that—after receiving tons of online support—both Universal Studios and Pharrell Williams have given him the rights to perform his Minions program at the upcoming Winter Olympics.
“I am very happy to announce that we have made it: we have obtained the licenses for all four musical pieces, and I will be able to skate my Minions program at the Olympic Games,” he announced Friday on Instagram. “It has not been an easy process, but the support from everyone who has followed my case has been essential in keeping me motivated and optimistic throughout these days.”
This comes just a few days after the skater revealed that he was close to clearing the use of his music...but with a catch. “There are still a couple things to be tied up with the other 2 musics of the program but we are so close to accomplishing it! AND IT’S ALL THANKS TO YOU!!” Tomàs wrote in an update on February 3. “I’m so happy to see that the minions hitting Olympic ice is becoming real again!! I’ll keep you posted.”
If you missed it: The Olympics Minions drama began on February 2—just four days before the opening ceremony—when Tomàs took to social media to announce that he was “no longer permitted to use this program due to copyright clearance issues,” even though he’d been performing his Minions-themed program throughout the season.
He added, “Finding this out last Friday, so close to the biggest competition of my life, was incredibly disappointing. I will face this challenge head-on and do everything I can to make the best of the situation.”
But with this new update, Tomàs has officially been cleared to hit the ice in his yellow shirt and denim overalls. And for that, I am grateful.
The six-time Spanish champion set to make his Olympic debut at Milano Cortina 2026, and while he’s not considered a medal contender, he’s definitely won over the crowd already with his Minions program.
Looking forward to seeing all this ^^ after the Winter Games kick off today!!
