Shane Boose, aka Sombr, took home his first-ever Moon Person award for Best Alternative Video at the VMAs just a few months ago—but still, he was pretty shook to receive a Grammys nom before even turning 21. “Wow. I am a Grammy nominated artist. I am in shock!!” he wrote on Instagram in an emotional post when the nominations were first announced. “Thank you @recordingacademy and everyone who voted for me. I am so proud to be recognized among so many amazing artists that I love and respect.”

He continued, “Ever since I was a small kid, I have lived and breathed music. It has changed my life in so many ways. This time last year, I was 19, depressed and not knowing where to turn. I wrote all of these songs on my own in my bedroom. Looking back, I am so thankful to everyone who encouraged me to keep going.”

And of course, he gave a shoutout to his fans: “Most importantly, thank you to the fans who got me here. You’re the reason I get up in the morning and keep doing this even when I’m at my lowest. Seeing how the music impacts you means everything to me. I love you so much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

When asked about the possibility of being nominated for a Grammy during his Seventeen cover story (which was published right before the nominations were announced), Sombr said, “To be in that conversation is something I never thought I would experience. I’m never gonna expect something—I think that’s an unhealthy way to go about my career—but it’s an honor.”

Keep dreaming big, friend!!
