[Contains spoilers for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.]

Last night saw the arrival of new Game of Thrones spin-off series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, telling the story of knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg.

Set a century before the events of Game of Thrones, the feel of the series is completely different, however, there's still lots of connections to both the original Game of Thrones series and House of the Dragon.

The main one? The character of Egg, who becomes the squire of Ser Duncan, but while he first appears to be a lowly stable boy, there's actually lot more to meet the eye when it comes to Egg, who has a very historic and royal family connection. So who exactly is Egg and where does he fit amongst the wider Game of Throne universe? Here's what you need to know.

Who is Egg?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R.R. Martin's novella series Tales of Dunk and Egg, and because these novellas have already been published we know a lot more about Egg than is first revealed in the premiere episode. So if you're ready for some serious spoilers scroll on.

In the first episode all we come to learn about Egg is that he is a stable boy whose mother has died and who insists upon coming with Dunk on his journey to Ashford and offers to become his squire. And by the end of the episode Dunk has agreed to let Egg join him as his squire.

However, the first novella in the Dunk and Egg series reveals that Egg is not actually a lowly stable boy but in fact he is Aegon Targaryen or Aegon V to be exact.

Aegon is the fifth child of Prince Maekar Targaryen and Dyanna Dayne.

How is Egg connected to the Targaryen family in House of the Dragon?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is placed timeline wise in-between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.

In terms of his Targaryen ancestors Prince Aegon aka Egg is the great-great-great grandson of Queen Rhaenyra and Prince Daemon from House of the Dragon.

Aegon's father Maekar, is the son of Daeron II, who is the great grandson of Rhaenyra and Daemon through their son Viserys, who we've only seen as a toddler so far in the House of the Dragon series.

How is Egg connected to the Targaryen family in Game of Thrones?

Game of Thrones takes place about a century after the events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

If you've watched Game of Thrones, you will have already met one of Egg's siblings. Egg's older brother is Maester Aemon, who is introduced as the Maester at the Night's Watch and was played by Peter Vaughan in the series. Aemon was sent away to the Citadel as a young boy to learn how to become a maester.

Egg is also the great grandfather of Daenerys Targaryen, through his son Jaehaerys, who is Daernerys' grandfather.
