A new Game of Thrones spinoff has entered the chat. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the adventures and misadventures of hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire "Egg," and if you're immediate response is "I've never heard of these people" that's because this show takes place decades before GOT.
Here's HBO's official description: "A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends."
So...did producers just make this story up out of thin air? Nope! A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on select George R.R. Martin novellas, and he's thrilled with the screen adaptation, saying "I'm very glad that Dunk and Egg are gonna exist in the world, because I love these characters, and I think other people will love them, too."
Which Books Are A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Based On?
The show is based on Tales of Dunk and Egg, which is comprised of three novellas: The Hedge Knight (which happens to be the title of episode 1), The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight.
It seems safe to assume (but nothing's been confirmed!) that season 1 is based on book one, which follows Dunk after he fakes his way into being a knight and enters a tourney—with the help of Egg, who he eventually takes on as a squire. The big twist in the book (SPOILER INCOMING) is...
Egg is secretly Aegon Targaryen.
Are the Books Available to Buy?
Yes! In a helpful collection, no less.
Here's the description on Amazon: "These collected adventures recount an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living consciousness. Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there was Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits."
