- The identity of the actor who plays Dorothy in Wicked: For Good has been revealed.
- Dorothy will be played by newcomer, Bethany Weaver.
- The Sun reports that Bethany didn't attend premieres in order to keep her identity a secret.
Audiences will be (sort of ) meeting Dorothy when Wicked: For Good hits theaters this Friday, and the identity of the actor has finally been revealed. According to multiple outlets, including Digital Spy and The Sun, Dorothy is played by British dancer, choreographer and actor Bethany Weaver. This is her first on-screen role.
The Sun reports that Universal Pictures "went to huge lengths to keep Bethany’s identity a secret, stopping her from attending the movie’s major premieres," as well as banning cast and crew from "following or interacting with her on social media."
This could be because director Jon M. Chu wanted to keep Dorothy's appearance low-key to preserve fan's preconceived notions of her. "I didn't want to step on who you think Dorothy is in whatever story that you came into this with," he explained to People, noting that Wicked: For Good "is still Elphaba and Glinda's journey, and [Dorothy] is a pawn in the middle of all of it."
The director previously told Variety, "In the show, Dorothy is around. They have to intersect, and you can only tease it so much. I won’t say whether she’s a character, necessarily, in movie two. There’s a part of me that wants everyone’s Dorothy to be the whatever Dorothy they want. And yet, there is interaction and some crossover. So I’ll leave that up to Part Two."
