Colleen Hoover is really the new Nicholas Sparks because the romantic drama adaptations just keep coming. Following 2024's It Ends with Us, the latest is Regretting You, based on Hoover's 2019 novel. (Film adaptations of Reminders of Him and Verity are on the way.)

Obviously, you're here because you want to know how the story ends—at least the movie version, the book differs slightly. So, spoilers ahead!

Regretting You is centered around Morgan (Allison Williams) and Clara Grant (Mckenna Grace), a mother and teen daughter, who have to grieve the unexpected death of their husband and father, Chris (Scott Eastwood), and sister and aunt, Jenny (Willa Fitzgerald).

What's that you say? They died at the same time? Yes, and that's because they were having a seemingly years-long affair and got in a car crash together. Morgan and Jenny's fiancé/father of her baby Jonah (Dave Franco) figure out the affair quickly after Chris and Jenny's tragic deaths, but keep it secret from Clara so as not to tarnish her memory of them. Meanwhile, Clara is also beginning to date a boy from school, Miller (Mason Thames), who her mom does not approve of because his dad is a felon.

And that's just the setup! Want to know how it all shakes out? Keep reading to find out what happens to each of the main characters.

What happens to Morgan?

Morgan and Chris dated in high school, and so did Jenny and Jonah. Morgan and Chris stayed together the entire time afterward, because she found out she was pregnant when she was 17. Jenny and Jonah broke up, but got back together more recently. Jonah and Morgan also had crushes on each other when they were young, but never acted on it unlike some people.

While mourning/being really pissed about the cheating, Morgan and Jonah realize they still have romantic feelings for each other and finally kiss one evening. But! Clara catches them, so they put their feelings aside temporarily, because, well, Clara just caught her mom and uncle-figure making out following the deaths of both their spouses! It's kind of a lot!

Eventually—and after some stuff we'll get into in the Clara section—Morgan comes clean to Clara about Chris and Jenny's affair, which puts the whole situation in a new light for Clara. This off her chest, Morgan shows up at Jonah's house in the rain (because duh) and tells him she loves him and that they were with the wrong people. After a kiss in which Jonah transfers a watermelon Jolly Rancher from his mouth to hers (watermelon Jolly Ranchers are their thing, but ew!), they have sex and burn a bunch of letters they found that Jenny wrote to Chris.

A flash-forward to a month later shows that Jonah and Morgan are happy, together, and raising Jonah and Jenny's baby... who is actually biologically Chris' baby 'cause of that whole affair thing.

What happens to Clara?

Clara and Miller's relationship is going great and they hope to go to UNCSA for college together. But, things are briefly thrown into question after Clara catches her mom making out with Jonah. Distraught, Clara invites Miller over to have sex for the first time RIGHT NOW, because she sees it as a way of getting back at her mom. Sure!

He comes over, they tell each other they're in love, they have sex, and Clara starts crying and admits what she's going through. Miller is mad that she's using him to get back at her mom, but says he'll stay until she falls asleep. The next morning, he's still there and Morgan catches him and Clara in bed together.

Still, that night Miller shows up to Clara's extremely awkward birthday dinner where he finds out she was accepted to UNCSA and didn't tell him. He was waitlisted. He leaves upset.

Mad about, basically everything in her life—and with good reason!—Clara and her friend Lexie (Sam Morelos) go visit her dad and aunt's graves and get drunk on red wine. Morgan finds them using a tracking app and takes them home, where she comforts a vomiting Clara.

The next morning, Clara and Morgan have the convo in which Morgan reveals Chris and Jenny's affair. Clara admits that she thought she was responsible for Jenny's death, because she was texting her at the time, but Morgan tells her that it was actually her dad driving the car. Morgan and Clara agree that they both deserve to be happy.

Flash-forward a month and Miller has planned an elaborate promposal for Clara in her backyard with their friends and family. He plays videos that show how he had a crush on Clara and wanted to ask her to prom even before they started dating. The same evening, Morgan tells Clara that she has finally accepted the fact that Clara wants to study theater in college and encourages her to go.

What happens to Jonah?

I mean, we pretty much covered Jonah in Morgan's section. Basically, he's in love with Morgan and loves and accepts his son, even though earlier in the movie he literally dropped the baby off at Morgan's house and was like, "He's not mine! See ya!"

What happens to Miller?

In addition to everything with Clara, Miller gets accepted to UNCSA off of the waitlist. At the promposal party, Miller says that he won't be attending college right away, though, because he wants to stick around to support his ailing grandfather, Gramps (Clancy Brown).

Gramps, who has been saying stuff this whole time about how Miller can "have his air"—which seems to be a joke about how Gramps is poor and has nothing to give him—reveals that he means his air rights. Gramps owns the air rights above some building in town and it's worth $500K. It's the greatest (and only?!) reveal about air rights since Burlesque.

Then, in a mid-credits scene, the storyline about Miller slowly moving the town limit sign closer and closer to his grandfather's house so that a pizza place will deliver there comes to a conclusion. He and Clara order pizza and... the pizza place knows where the sign is now located over the phone?? I'm not sure this makes sense. Actually, I'm sure it doesn't, but as a supporter of both love and pineapples on pizza, at least Miller and Clara ended up with both.
