- Big Little Lies season 3 is officially in the works at HBO.
- Francesca Sloane has reportedly been hired to executive produce the season and write the first episode.
- Star Shailene Woodley confirmed the news on Instagram.
After 6 long years, HBO Max is officially working on Big Little Lies season 3. The season is still in early stages and contracts have yet to be signed, but that didn't stop star Shailene Woodley from confirming her BLL season 3 return with an exciting Instagram Story post.
Various cast members from Big Little Lies have been teasing a season 3 for years—pretty much ever since season 2 aired in 2019. The show, which focuses on the lives of five mothers living on the coast of California in Carmel, ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, and fans have been begging for more ever since. Now, it's finally coming together.
On Thursday, Sept. 11, it was announced that Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-creator Francesca Sloane had been hired as an executive producer on season 3 and will write the first episode. Per Variety, she'll be producing alongside stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, as well as David E. Kelley. Reports suggest that none of the core cast—Nicole, Reese, Shailene, Zoë Kravitz, and Laura Dern—have signed contracts yet, but that didn't stop Shailene from celebrating the news.
“We ARE so back...Big Little Lies 3, you ready?” she wrote over a photo of her, Laura, and Zoë from a recent event. “Cause... it's happening,” she concluded with a second photo of the BLL mini reunion.
As for what season 3 will be about, that remains unclear. Last year, HBO chief Casey Boys said that they were hoping to model season 3 after author Liane Moriarty finished her sequel to the original novel that inspired the show. “[Nicole's] very excited. They're all excited. We're excited. We're all waiting for the book, which I believe is coming soon, but I do not have a copy in my hands,” Casey told Deadline at the time.
Liane's sequel will reportedly jump forward in time, so all of the kids who were in Kindergarten in season 1 would now be teenagers and is expected to hit the shelves in 2026. There is, unfortunately, no official timeline for when fans can expect season 3. Hopefully Shailene will fill us in on more soon!
