Only at the Venice Film Festival can Lewis Pullman and Kaia Gerber go public with their relationship, Amanda Seyfried borrow Julia Robert’s whole outfit, and Jacob Elordi get into a heated confrontation with a festival official.

Jacob was in Venice to celebrate the premiere of his newest film, Frankenstein, in which he stars as The Creature (aka Frankenstein’s monster) opposite Oscar Isaac’s Dr. Frankenstein. Naturally, he took his time walking down the red carpet, posing for paparazzi and fans. It was that last one, apparently, that irked one of the security guards accompanying him.

Video from the red carpet shows Jacob chatting with adoring fans, signing autographs and leaning in for a selfie when he was stopped by a member of the Venice Film Festival staff. It’s hard to make out exactly what they were saying to each other, but it seems like the security guard had some kind of issue with Jacob stopping to chat with fans.

In the video, Jacob can be heard saying, “I’m going to take a picture right here,” as he crouches down to take a selfie. “Don’t ever tell me what to do,” he added.

Jacob has not commented on the incident, nor have Venice Film Festival officials, but it looks like they had a disagreement on either safety or time management. Film festival security are somewhat notorious for rushing celebrity guests on red carpets—see: Kelly Rowland at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

And, according to @wickedren (one of the attendees who got the coveted Jacob selfie), security was “rushing him inside,” but he still insisted on taking time with fans.

While fans were delighted that Jacob took the time to say hello, commenters have since questioned his actions, accusing him of rude for dismissing the festival official. Wherever you stand, rest assured that the Frankenstein premiere went off without a hitch—or notable delay. The Guillermo del Toro film received a 13-minute standing ovation at the festival, leaving Jacob visibly moved, and I can’t wait to watch it.

Frankenstein opens in select theaters on Oct. 17, and will hit Netflix on Nov. 7.
