Spoiler alert: Do not read unless you have seen The Last of Us season 2, episode 2 “Through the Valley.” Major spoilers ahead.

Well, that happened. Staying true to the original The Last of Us Part II game, The Last of Us killed Joel in season 2, episode 2, “Through the Valley.” Fans are, to put it lightly, devastated. And based on Pedro Pascal's own reaction to Joel's death, the actor is right there with them, going through the stages of grief.

“I'm in active denial,” Pedro told Entertainment Weekly. “I realize this more and more as I get older, I find myself slipping into denial that anything is over.” Of course, Pedro isn't necessarily mourning Joel's death so much as he's mourning his time on set, but it's still comforting to know that he's in denial just like the rest of us!

“I know that I'm forever bonded to so many members of the experience and just have to see them under different circumstances, but never will under the circumstances of playing Joel on The Last of Us,” he continued. “And, no, I don't spend a lot of time thinking about it because it makes me sad.” Well that makes a couple hundred thousand of us, Pedro!!

When he signed on to the project, Pedro knew that Joel's time on the show would be limited, though he admitted that he didn't know exactly when his character would be killed off. “It's not like they said, ‘Hey, we kill you at the beginning of season 2,’ but it was always an understanding that it would stay true to the source material in a specific way,” he said. “It was just a matter of how and when,” he said.

Just because Joel is dead doesn't mean we won't see him again before the season is over. Again, just as in the game, Ellie and Joel's relationship will live on through flashbacks peppered in throughout the season. Though, when these scenes occur, Pedro won't say. “Something that I do feel like keeping secret is how will those things play and where will they be placed,” he told EW, calling their placements “still a lovely thing to not know for people that watch the show.”

I think I speak for all Pedro fans when I say, we'll be watching!
